Katie has practised in commercial and business law for more than 13 years. Katie provides expert advice to a range of clients including private companies, insolvency practitioners, industry bodies, co-operatives, and Commonwealth, State & Territory Governments. Her practice focus includes business structuring, procurement, contracting, intellectual property law, and privacy law.
In all transactions, whether it be the sale or acquisition of a business, goods or services, protecting your assets or forming a new venture, Katie’s focus is on developing a detailed understanding of the project’s characteristics and risks to determine the appropriate contract structure and terms to ensure her client’s interests are protected, and the resulting contract is clear, efficient and effective.
Katie is an advisor to a number of industry bodies, providing advice on their corporate governance requirements and their role as accrediting agencies, particularly in relation to the preparation of their accreditation methodologies and internal decision review processes.
Today, online transactions are a large part of daily life for both individuals and businesses and so protecting personal information is paramount. Katie regularly advises clients on the application of the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth), the Information Privacy Act 2014 (ACT) and the Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009 (NSW), including advice on managing complaints of breach of privacy and notification of data breaches.
Katie was admitted to legal practice in the ACT in 2007 and joined Williams Love & Nicol Lawyers (the predecessor of BAL Lawyers) that same year as a solicitor. In 2012 Katie was appointed a Senior Associate and became a Director in 2016. In November 2016 she gained her Business Law Specialist Accreditation from the NSW Law Society. Katie was a commercial law mentor for students undertaking their Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice with the Australian National University’s Legal Workshop between 2012 and 2020. Katie currently sits on the Board of Focus ACT, a registered NDIS provider and charity dedicated to supporting people living with a disability to live their life.
