Alan has more than 25 years’ experience in administrative law and dispute resolution with a particular emphasis on planning, environmental and local government law. Alan has an in depth knowledge of the legislative and administrative legal framework within which local councils operate and acts for over 16 local councils, as well as private clients, to support sound planning outcomes at the local and regional level. Alan also acts for corporate clients in the ACT providing advice on the ACT’s unique planning regime.

He is an experienced advocate with experience in a wide range of courts and tribunals including the NSW Land and Environment Court, the ACT Civil and Administrative Tribunal and the Commonwealth Administrative Appeals Tribunal. Alan is a Member (and past National President) of the Australian Institute of Administrative Law, a Member of the Environmental and Planning Law Association and a Past President of the National Environmental Law Association.

Alan lectures in Environmental Land use and Sustainability Law at the Australian National University and his expertise in planning and environmental law has recently been recognised by his selection as the Australian Financial Review Best Lawyer Canberra Planning and Environmental Law for 2017. He has also been included in Doyles List of Australia’s Top 25 Planning and Environmental Lawyers and is a NSW Law Society Accredited Specialist in Local Government and Planning Law.
